Research Report
of China's Silicon Metal and Organic Silicon Industry in 2006

Introduction
Silicon is a non-metallic element. It is grey, hard and crisp
with metallic lustre. Content of silicon accounts for 26% of the
weight of earth crust; it ranks the second in all elements and
oxygen, element which has the largest content in earth crust,
combines with silicon and forms silicon dioxide (SiO2) which
accounts for 87% of the total weight of earth crust. Its atomic
weight is 28.80; its density is 2.33g/m3; melting point is
1410C, boiling point is 2355C and specific resistance is
2140¦¸.m.
Product produced from siliceous mineral (such as silica, SiO2)
and carbonaceous reducing agent by carbothermic method, which
contains over 97% of silicon, is usually called industrial
silicon in China, and is called metallic silicon in English and
silicon metal in Russian.
